The Spartans had no problem hitting shots tonight against Rutgers. Bryn Forbes, Denzel Valentine and Eron Harris were all raining threes against the Scarlet Knights. The Spartans made 17 three-pointers when the buzzer finally came. When MSU did miss they rebounded, the Spartans grabbed 56 boards compared to the 27 that Rutgers had. Izzo said in the press conference he was pleased with the shooting but the team will practice on defense this week as he doesn't want to just rely on offense. Let's take a look at the three players who were on fire tonight in our top three players of the game segment.

Denzel Valentine: 20 points, seven rebounds, six assists

Valentine looks like he is on the playground every game. He can shoot the ball from where ever he wants, he can drive into the lane with a nifty lay-up or dunk and finds his teammates in the most stylish ways. He had a few no look passes that would of resulted in points if the play was finished. Valentine is still very much in the race of Big Ten player-of-the-year.

Bryn Forbes: 18 points

He Got It MSU 76 NW 45

There was no stopping Michigan State tonight against Northwestern. The Spartans jumped out to a 7-0 lead and didn't look back. MSU dominated just about every stat, holding the edge in rebounds 43-31, assists 22-7, blocks 8-3, and of course points 76-45. It was nice to see the Spartans win comfortable after a nailbiter against Maryland and one-point games against Wisconsin and Nebraska. The Spartans dominated from the outside shooting 16-for-26 from three-point range. It was nice to see the guards really pick it up when the bigs struggled. Matt Costello had finished with four points, Gavin Schilling was in foul trouble and Kenny Goins, Marvin Clark Jr, and Javon Bess were limited, but there were three players who really stood out tonight so let's take a look at who impressed.

Denzel Valentine: 19 points, seven assists, six rebounds

There is no question that Valentine can shoot the ball at the next level. Just before halftime, Valentine drilled a long three-pointer, and I'm not just talking NBA three-point range, it was probably five feet behind that. Once again Valentine was close [..]

Rebounding, hitting clutch free-throws, swatting shots, knocking teammates over and throwing Izzo around. Nothing was off-limits for senior captain Matt Costello against Maryland. All three seniors, Costello, Denzel Valentine and Bryn Forbes had strong efforts in MSU's 74-65 victory over No. 7 ranked Maryland. The Spartans needed this win too. After one-point losses to Wisconsin and Nebraska, MSU came out knocked Maryland down in the first few minutes, the Spartans came ready to play for this one. The Izzone had its best game of the season. The students made every effort to throw Maryland off its game tonight and it worked.

Let's take a look at the top three players from tonight's game.

Matt Costello: 15 points, 12 rebounds, three blocks

Costello is an emotional guy and he isn't afraid to show his excitement. Down the stretch, Costello rebounded, blocked shots, made clutch free-throws, knocked over Kenny Goins and about threw Izzo over his shoulder after the game. This is all after not practicing for three days while nursing an ankle. Who needs practice? Costello doesn't.
