MSU vs DENVER Hockey Preview

The Michigan State hockey team (1-0-1) after a successful Ice Breakers Tournament to open the season last week in the Northeast, will take their game out west to Colorado to face off with #5 Denver University.

It will be the first time the Spartan skaters go up against Denver since October 11th 2002. MSU trails the all time series between the two schools 54-16-2.

Last weekend, 11 different Spartans had at least 1 point in two games played. Freshman Defenseman:

Zach Osburn opened his Spartan career with 2 goals and an assist in the tournament earning the BIG TEN number two star of the week.

The injury bug has hit the Spartans early and often this season, Forwards Ryan Keller (lower body) and Dylan Pavelek (cut via a skate blade to leg) are out and will not make the trip with the team.

Senior Captain Forward, Michael Ferrantino (upper body) and Junior Forward Villiam Haag (upper body) as of this writing are questionable.

We are just hours away, from Michigan State Hockey dropping the puck on the 2015-16 season. It begins at the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland, Maine Friday night.

The Ice Breakers Challenge field is very competitive as four of the major confrences in college hockey are represented. Here is a quick preview of the Field.

The host team, enters the season looking to bounce back from a disappointing season a year ago. Normally a Hockey East power house will look at goaltending and defense to carry the team early on this season, The team will need to find who will step up on the offensive end as two of the team's offensive stallworth's from a year ago in Devin Shore and Ben Hutton who left early to go pro.

A solid group of upperclassmen including Cam Brown and Blaine Byron who could emerge as offensive threats.

"It was nice to have an opportunity to play, I thought the game got a little better in quality as it went on and we wanted to use this as an evaluation".

The words from Spartan Hockey Head Coach, Tom Anastos after Michigan State's 2-1 exhibition win against the Mustangs of Western Ontario on Sunday afternoon.

It took exactly two minutes into the game, when the Spartans got the crowd at Munn Ice Arena to their feet. Freshman forward Cody Milan introduced himself to the crowd with a goal on a two-on-one break away with teammate Justin Hoomaian.

The Mustangs would find the equalizer on the power play at 8:37 in the period by winger Noah Schwartz.

It would remain tied into the second period. Spartan defenseman Travis Walsh would notch what would turn out to be the game winning goal, on a rebound off an initial shot from the point from Captain Micheal Ferrantino.

Spartan goaltender, Jake Hildebrand would stop 14-of-15 shots in two periods of play until backup Sophomore Ed Minney would come in the 3rd and played very well. The 6'5 200lb Pennsylvania native would especially shine on a breakaway stop [..]
