Torey Krug Stands Out in NHL Playoffs

We’re hearing an awful lot about the impact that college defensemen are having on the professional game this season. Hockeytown has been buzzing about the contributions the Red Wings got from Dan DeKeyser (Western Michigan) and Brendan Smith (Wisconsin).

Lately, we’ve seen hockey fans in Boston amazed at what Torey Krug has brought to the Boston Bruins. With two goals and an assist in his first two NHL playoff games, following his call up from the Bruins AHL team in Providence, fans are now wondering if he’s become a permanent fixture on the blue line in The Hub.

As Spartan fans, we’re not surprised at all. For three seasons, we saw what Krug brought to the ice every night. We saw a player who was a natural leader, being elected as team captain as a sophomore. We saw a player who, despite being undersized (MSU had him listed as 5’ 9”… in his skates, maybe!) was named to the CCHA’s All-Rookie Team after leading the league’s rookie defensemen in scoring.

As a sophomore he added the pressure of being the team’s captain, but still more than tripled his goal scoring numbers while earning the Top Offensive Defenseman honors from the conference. In fact, in that second season he was voted to the pre-season second team, but finished the year as a first team All-Conference selection!

Then in his junior season, Torey led the league in scoring and was named as a finalist for the prestigious Hobey Baker Award. He got better and better every season that he wore the Green and White!

This season, as a member of the Providence Bruins, he led his team in scoring from the blue line with 13 goals and 32 assists for 45 points and the top seed in the AHL’s Eastern Conference. Now in the NHL, Torey has 2 goals and 3 assists in 5 career games! I was recently asked by a fan if it was time to believe the hype surrounding Torey.
My response?

Torey has been too small to succeed for his entire life, yet he keeps on succeeding, first in Juniors, then at Michigan State and now as a professional. In my mind, it’s not hype at all. Torey has proven that he deserves the shot he’s gotten. He’s earned it!
