Matt Tjapkes is in his second season as lead voice for Spartan Softball, broadcasting both home and away games during the Big 10 season. Tjapkes will be joined by former Spartan player Ali Grant for all home games. A native of Grand Haven, Mich., Tjapkes began his journalism career writing sports for five years at the Grand Haven Tribune before moving to the broadcast booth. In 2007-08, Tjapkes served as play-by-play broadcaster and Director of Communications for the Muskegon Fury hockey club, a member of the International Hockey League. Following the sale of the team, Tjapkes performed some freelance work, including fill-in work for the Bloomington Prairie Thunder of the IHL, before joining the staff at WGHN Radio in Grand Haven in 2010. Tjapkes has covered numerous sports at WGHN and sister station WMPA, including prep baseball, basketball, football and hockey. For the past two years, he has also hosted the weekly “Crusader Coach's Show", highlighting coverage of Muskegon Catholic Central Football, the back-to-back MHSAA Division 8 State Champions in 2013 and 2014. Tjapkes and commentator Jeff Rose were awarded “Best in Category" for Division IV sports play-by-play in 2010 for their coverage of prep hockey, and won “Special Mention" in the same category in 2011. Tjapkes and his wife, Melissa, reside in Grand Haven with their three children: Hannah, Gabrielle and Caleb.
